Richard at the 1987 Mythcon in Milwaukee

It is with great sadness I note the passing of my old friend and fellow Tolkien and fantasy scholar Richard C. West, from covid-19. He passed in the early morning of Sunday, November 29th, 2020, in Madison, Wisconsin, and will long be missed. He was 76.

Myself and Richard at the 1992 Tolkien Centenary Conference in Oxford

Richard's passing is a real loss to Tolkiendom. He belonged to that early group of readers who produced many of the best Tolkien and Mythopoeic fanzines. I'm glad that there was a late last (I suppose) issue of Orcrist a few years ago, with Richard's involvement. I never met him, but his emails seemed to me the communications of a gentleman.

The copy of Richard's "Tolkien criticism : an annotated checklist" in the Lancaster University Library was the book that started me collecting Tolkien and the revised edition was one of the first books about Tolkien I bought. We corresponded briefly when I ordered back issues of Orcrist (in the days of letters and US$ money orders). I met him in passing at the 1987 Mythcon (my first) which inspired me to get involved in running the 1992 centenary conference where I again met him briefly. He inspired me and will be missed.
